Yet another successful week at GovsPLUS! The students arrived on campus Monday morning excited and energetic to be back. This week the students attended normal classes and a special class with Mrs. Allen to determine their personality and learning styles. She provided the students with different studying techniques which they could use in the future.
Tuesday morning the students worked together down at the garden with Mr. Swift. After a quick tour of the organic garden they learned the basics to gardening and tips on having a ‘green thumb’.
The 7th graders were introduced to a dance class taught by Katy Maina ‘15 who joined us this week for the rest of the summer.
Afternoon activities were jam-packed with games of kickball, Jeopardy, large group charades, and a special afternoon of 4 art stations.
Friday the students and staff hopped on the bus and landed in Worcester, MA for our first field trip Friday! They arrived on the campus of Clark University to be greeted by their tour guide for the day, Gov’s alum Jalina Suggs ‘13, whom returning students were very excited to see as she was a staff member at GovsPLUS last summer.
After the tour we all had lunch in a green space at Clark then hopped over to Worcester Historical Museum. There the students had a blast. They learned about the Civil War and the origin of the ‘Smiley Face.’ They were able to make their own smiley faces, pose for pictures with ‘Smiley,’ and dress up for a photo booth.
It has been an amazing week at GovsPLUS! Two weeks down, three more action-packed weeks to go!
