The GovsPLUS Summer of 2014 kickoff week was a very successful one! Students arrived to campus on a bus and were accompanied by 4 staff members (Ashley Portorreal ’15, Ariel Portorreal ’16, Yosvani Lopez and Ricky Rios) bright and early Monday morning. They were met with enthusiasm by fellow staff members Hannah Wagner ’16, Emma Nekoroski ’16, and Abby Bashaw ’17.
After a hearty breakfast down at the Dining Hall the students jumped right into classes. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders all attended problem solving, communications, and a special technology class to get set all up for their technological needs this summer. Afternoon activities consisted of ice-breaker games to give the students an opportunity to get to know each other in a fun way.
The following day the students gathered at the field house for a morning full of team building activities led by Governor’s Academy’s Dean of Faculty, Ms. Fitzgerald. Throughout the morning the students worked together in different activities, then came together to piece what they thought a recipe for a successful summer would be. They resumed to normal classes that afternoon. The 8th graders were able to part take in an Athena class (a woman empowerment class that focuses on current events and personal experiences) taught by Ashley. The 6th and 7th graders attended a drama class led by Hannah, Emma, and Ricky.
Due to the 4th of July, the week was shorter than usual but ended off on a great note! Thursday looked like a normal schedule but in the afternoon we took a half day trip to Theater in the Open at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MA. At Theater in the Open the students partook in an improv activity led by Governor’s very own Bonnie Jean Wilbur.
The GovsPLUS kick off week was a great one! We look forward to the upcoming weeks with much excitement!
