Only 5 days after a long hard day dedicated to service with Massachusetts Special Olympics, GovsPLUS reconvened on Friday night to enjoy a culturally enriching off-campus performance together and just have some fun.

Following a group dinner in the Govs dining hall, GovsPLUS students joined Academy students for a trip to Boston to see a performance by the only professional step dance company in America, Step Afrika! GovsPLUS students — who learned to step dance this summer in an enrichment course which was designed and taught entirely by Govs alumna Jalina Suggs ’13 — were awed by the performance and were thrilled to see the talents of these true stepping professionals. While Jalina was off at college where she is currently on both the dance and basketball teams, we couldn’t help but think of the opportunities she gave us all to learn this summer. We missed you last night, Jalina!!!

Govs and GovsPLUS students alike were captivated by the lively and energetic show that had us all dancing, hollering, and clapping to the beat late into the night. Three current Govs students even had the opportunity to get on stage to learn and perform a step live. The GovsPLUS students, who are getting to know more and more current Academy students through our year-round programming, loved seeing some of their new friends on stage in this role and cheered them on wildly in their performance. Go Dieusica, Toby, & Kerin!

Peppered into the performance numbers and audience-formed step “class” was the sharing of the histories both African-American fraternity and sorority stepping traditions and its parallel, South African gumboot dancing. The opportunity to expand our cultural horizons while witnessing the incredible talent of these true dance professionals was well worth the late night and bleary-eyed Saturday morning for all. What a show!

GovsPLUS is actively planning and finalizing the winter season of the program. We will be connecting with students in the next few weeks with even more opportunities to learn and play together. We can’t wait to continue GovsPLUS this winter!
