Cold, raw, rainy weather and an early morning pick up time did not stop twenty GovsPLUS students from showing their community spirit and volunteering outside at today’s MA Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
GovsPLUS students joined over 400 volunteers who make this statewide tournament happen for over 1000 athletes in a spirited day of fun and sportsmanship. The GovsPLUS students worked as “team escorts” alongside Govs students in the same role. Each group of escorts was assigned a team with which they worked throughout the day. The escorts helped move the team from field to field between games, cheered on the athletes as they played, and helped run down stray balls along the sidelines during the games.
GovsPLUS students enjoyed getting to know even more Govs students through their joint volunteer efforts and were happy to find another opportunity to give back through community service since our trip with Groundwork Lawrence this summer. One GovsPLUS 8th grader whose brother is a Special Olympics athlete had the opportunity to continue her service to his soccer organization by “escorting” his team around all day. Win-win!
It was a fun and rewarding day for all and we thank the GovsPLUS students for their volunteering service today. Great job, guys!
GovsPLUS gets together again real soon for a trip to Boston to see professional step dance troop “Step Afrika!” next Friday night. It promises to be another excellent adventure together!
