October 12: Essex Art Center

Twenty out of twenty-five GovsPLUS students gathered at the Essex Art Center in Lawrence for a fun-filled afternoon of creativity and artistic expression.

The students had time to check out the gallery before creating their own self-portraits first in charcoal, then in a choice of pencil, acrylic paint, pastels, or all three! Local artist Thea Shapiro helped students through the creative process. She emphasized self-exploration and personal styles as key elements in portrait design. Students reflected on their personalities before capturing them in their own self-portraits. They created incredibly poignant and beautiful works of art. Check out a sampling of the students’ creations below!

We can’t wait to see the students again for a day of service as we volunteer together at Massachusetts Special Olympics state soccer tournament on Sunday, November 3 on The Governor’s Academy’s campus!
