Twenty-five ambitious middle school students and their families stepped onto the Academy’s campus for the first time this morning for a welcome brunch and campus orientation to GovsPLUS (see group pic above!). Director Holly O’Donohue greeted the guests in the Student Center which will be the heart of the program this summer. Student-instructors Brett Bidstrup ’13, Jalina Suggs ’13, and Ariel Portorreal ’16 gave tours of the campus and students and their families had an opportunity to get the lay of the land and ask questions before classes begin next week. Trustee, alumnus, and parent Spencer Purinton (who helped create the framework for GovsPLUS and co-chaired the program’s planning committee) and Headmaster Peter Quimby joined in for the occasion. Dr. Quimby welcomed the families as the newest members of the Academy community – an impactful message for parents and students who were visitors to Byfield when they first arrived but left campus as Govs.
The GovsPLUS summer program officially begins Monday morning when the bus picks up these talented and tenacious young students in Lawrence at 7:30AM. We cannot wait to get going and are looking forward to a fun summer of hard work and exciting new learning!
